Presence of God
“There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful, than that of a continual conversation with God. Those only can comprehend it who practice and experience it.” – Brother Lawrence
We serve a God who is omnipresent; that is, He is everywhere, all the time. In Psalms 139:7-8, David asked, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.”
Understanding the importance of living in the presence of God is not easy, particularly at age when a high premium is placed on self-reliance, independence and personal achievement. As with all such spiritual disciplines, learning to live in the continual presence of God must be practiced in order to become second nature. But how?
In his book, Practice of the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence, a 17th century Carmelite monk, noted that we should engage in “continual conversation” with God as we go about our daily lives, seeking nothing but to honor Christ in everything. It also means that we must remember that wherever we may be, we walk with an invisible omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God by our side. As Christians, this knowledge should not only humble us, but motivate us to live our lives in a way that is entirely Holy and pleasing to Him.
