“Nothing so relieves suffering and misery as a spirit of non-resistance.” Isn’t that an interesting observation! But most of us don’t go that route–instead we grumble, gripe, fuss, fret, and think of ways to “get even.” The foundation of non-resistance in your thinking is that you recognize that God is sovereign, and that nothing is incidental, accidental, or wasted. The Bible says that “all things work together for good.” Very few of us actually believe that! The end result is great perplexity. But I read this week that “[Jesus] has no perplexity.”¹ Continue Reading »

A homeless drunk, with a $10 billion bank account, sleeping under Chicago bridges is not nearly as pathetic (foolish, insane) as a Christian, indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God, who is still living a spiritually crummy, self-centered life. Continue Reading »

When you lose, you muse, and then choose. That is a potential pathway for depression. You lose something, (or are blocked, thwarted, diverted from what you wanted) then you muse (think about it) and then . . . choose what to do next. The loss may be something material like your tooth brush, or intangible such as information you need for a test. It can be insignificant, or extremely serious, such as the death of a loved one. It happens to all of us, and frequently! How you think (muse) and choose to process these daily losses is of tremendous importance to you. Continue Reading »

Recently, a good friend sent me some of his thinking, which I believe is worth passing on:
I used to get frustrated and angry that my wife often would not take may advice. I was supposed to be the leader of our family, but she often wouldn’t follow! I was disturbed that she wouldn’t submit to me, but in hindsight, I can see she had legitimate reasons. Frankly, I wasn’t worth submitting to! I didn’t resemble Jesus closely enough in my attitudes and behavior to give her confidence in biblically submitting to me. I was on my agenda, not God’s. Continue Reading »

Isaiah 26:3 says: “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Many people are looking for “peace” these days; it is right here! This peace is perfect; that means that nothing can upset it…if you get it from a mind that is locked on to God. This seems to me to be another incredible promise from God flowing from His infinite love for us.
The source is God; the location is in your mind. It has to do with right thinking.

In John 4, Jesus spoke to the woman at the well in such a way that she believed in Him, went back to her town, and told the people enough about Him that a whole bunch of them “believed in Him,” and walked clear out to the well to find out more. Verses 39-41 says that “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony…they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.” Now watch this!: Continue Reading »

I read about a college sophomore named Debbie, who accomplished a basketball feat no one has ever done in the history of the sport, ever–not in the NBA, college, or high school, male or female. In one 23-game series, she made 133 consecutive free throws. On a subsequent two-hour TV demonstration she attempted 585 free throws, and Continue Reading »

I want to recommend Andrew Murray’s book GOD’S BEST SECRETS…a daily one pager that I have found especially helpful. On page 132 he talks about the obedience of love.
